You can save their life!

These are the people that need help URGENTLY in order to leave their troubles behind. They received intense support through our specialist partner associations and are more than ready for a brand new start.

Will you give them now a 2ndChance?

Other families that need help from 2ndChance:

V.V., a 52 year old man, died last spring from throat cancer. He couldn’t eat and had to survive on expensive tube feeding. His wife, now a widow, also suffers from a chronic disease. She has to manage with a limited household budget and lives in a rental house.

Medical expenses , prior to her husband’s passing away: 2.527 euro. VLK allowance: 880 euro.

B.P., a 40 year old man, recently died from lymph nodes cancer, leaving behind his 4 children and wife, with considerable debts outstanding. Because he ran his own independent business, they are now left with little social support. Every single one of the kids needs and deserves a second chance to overcome their misfortune in a doable way.

Medical expenses: 1.790 euro. VLK allowance: 540 euro.

E.B. is a 48 year old man, suffering from metastatic tongue cancer and lack of movement in the lower limbs. He has children to care for and, not unusual at his age, several loans to pay. All cancers involving the digestive system tend to be grim. Not just the disease, but also the drastic diet changes come as a heavy burden.

Medical expenses: 1.985 euro. VLK allowance: 270 euro.

M.S., a 58 year old woman.

Bad luck! Single, suffering from metastased cancer, and having to manage with an income below the poverty line. Half of her income goes to the monthly rent.

Medical expenses: 886 euro. VLK allowance: 310 euro.

A.R., 63 years old.

Divorced women are becoming the New Poor… Quite often, they worked part time for many years in order to take care of the children, and they haven’t contributed enough to benefit from a full pension. This patient had to cope with an extremely stressful divorce process,  the sudden death of her beloved father who was also her mentor, and she is facing metastatic breast cancer. These heavy misfortunes that crossed her path have taken away all her mental strength. Lucky enough, she could count on her friends to make her daily life somewhat bearable. Latest calculation: medical expenses 1.666 euro. VLK allowance 460 euro.

A.V., a 40 year old woman, is a Non-Hodgkin patient. She underwent a  stem cell transplantation, a rather invasive cancer treatment. This mother has 5 kids going to school, and a husband also facing medical problems. Medical expenses : 5.546 euro. VLK allowance: euro 830.

L.R., 48 years old, suffers from lung cancer, her husband is an invalid, her little daughter is only just 4 years old. The family lives on minute revenues, and can hardly afford even limited child care. As a rule, lung cancer tends to show grim prognosis. The child’s future isn’t exactly free of sorrow.

A.U., 57 years old, suffering from metastased colon cancer, and from poor liver functioning. This man still has a mortgage to pay. His mother in law, who lived under the same roof, also had cancer when we received their request for support. In the meantime, she has passed away. His spouse is a house wife and has no income of her own. Two cancer patients in one family, combined with a very tight budget, make daily life extremely bleak. And now, on top of the sorrow and mourning, come the debts.

Medical expenses: 3.128 euro. VLK allowance: 570 euro.

A.I.  This 56 year old patient spent several years abroad. As a result, her local social network is quite limited. At the moment, she lives on a minimum income. She suffers from breast cancer. Her twin sister recently committed suicide. A rather desperate situation, both mentally, socially and financially. Medical expenses until now: 340 euro. VLK allowance: 180 euro.

They previously received our help

Maria (°1957), single person, lives on a daily budget of 31 euro, whereas she used to earn a decent salary as a nurse with many years of seniority. Her savings, being systematically nibbled off, will be depleted eventually. Her breast cancer is chronic. 3.672,91 euro of medical expenses . VLK allowance : 730 euro.

Joeri (°1993)  This young cancer patient’s parents had only just set up their own business when, last year, the economic crisis emerged. On top of that, their son was diagnosed with cancer. They discontinued their business, and they don’t have the right to unemployment benefits yet. Having to do without the lease car now, the multiple trips between the countryside and the hospital are problematic. Forced by circumstances, they have depleted their savings. The unfortunate coincidence of circumstances makes this a true ‘Second Chance’ situation.

Karin (22 years old) suffers from lymph node cancer. Her illness has kept her from proving herself in the labour market. She receives a minor temporary allowance. She lives with her mother. Her parents are divorced; her father is chronically ill and has an alcohol problem. Her brother and sister have already paid many bills from their savings, which is causing family tensions. In reality, this is a ‘First Chance’ case, maybe even more important than a ‘Second Chance’. 2.140,22 euro of medical expenses. VLK allowance: 610 euro.

Jenny (°1954) is a lung cancer patient, whose husband has contracted AIDS. Both of them have considerable medical expenses. One income for two people (1.380 euro from early retirement pension) and 675 euro of monthly rent. No further explanation needed. The whole family being ill, they are facing an extremely difficult time! 1.176,75 euro medical expenses. VLK allowance: 360 euro.

Christiane Yet another sad situation with two ill family members, that came to our knowledge through the e-cancer line. Christiane suffers from fibromyalgia, arthritis and muscle spasticity. Her husband has metastatic lung cancer. They are no longer capable of running the household and maintaining the house.

Marie-Rose (°1947). Three cancer patients in one and the same family. This patient has had breast cancer at the age of 42, and she was lucky enough to recover. Her husband, at the age of 53, died a ‘sudden’ death after he was diagnosed with fatal prostate cancer. At the age of 60, she was next in turn to get esophageal cancer. This is a ‘gloomy’ cancer involving drastic surgical intervention as well as a complete diet transition.  She survived relatively well, but since 2 years needs tube feeding during the night in order to stay on weight, and that is a costly affair. Meanwhile, she has three grandchildren who give her some relief. 8.135,44 euro of medical expenses . Our interventions totalled 1.260 euro.

Kathy (°1966) is a breast cancer patient with two young children aged 7 and 9. She is divorced and doesn’t receive any child support because the father lives abroad. She is responsible for the family’s future. She has a mortgage loan, and needs to pay a lawyer to get her rights honoured by the father. Rather difficult. 821,81 euro of medical expenses . VLK intervention to date: 250 euro.

Tom (°1985) is a young man, suffering from bone cancer since 2005. He was welcomed to Belgium as a promising football talent; after an injury, he was diagnosed with bone cancer. A shattered future with lots of chaos (as is his character), and an income from minimal allowances. Tom has had a leg amputation and is now wearing a prosthesis. He joined us on our Youth Holidays at the seaside. He is also diabetic, and the treatment demands meticulous instructions and follow-up. His erratic way of life certainly hasn’t helped.

4.658,81 euro of medical expenses and 1.530 euro of VLK allowance until now.

T.G. (°1969) is a woman of Afghan origin, who stranded here after her stay in the Netherlands. She is a single person with very limited income. The move from the Netherlands already caused her financial problems, and she has to cope with breast cancer. The additional expenses are the one drop too much, putting her in great distress.935,93 euro of medical expenses; 370 euro of VLK allowance.

Veronique (°1960) is a divorced woman, and has metastatic breast cancer. She lives with her 10 year old daughter, and faces an uncertain future. In this case, the emphasis is on the child. Can we imagine what it must mean to a child to first undergo a divorce, and be confronted with her mother’s incurable illness?

2.294,84 euro of medical expenses . VLK allowance: 780 euro.
